When people ask us about interior design and where they should start designing their room, We often suggest they begin with a cold glass of chardonnay. Though this advice may sound flippant, there is a point to it - we are the top Pakistani interior designers and at this first stage of the interior design process, you must be as relaxed and unconstrained as possible. Spend time building up a mental picture of your fantasy room; the more a scheme gets thought through, the better it becomes. By the time I hit the drawing board, I like to feel that all thing has been more or less wholly thought through in my head.
To create your dream room, you will need to gather some creativity and inspiration. In an Interior design project, at this stage, try to keep it as broad as possible. If something appeals, then photograph it. A fridge, a color, a tropical island, or unexpected things can provide you with that potentially highly creative starting point.
Once you have gathered images for what is known in the trade as a ‘mood board,’ put them together on a piece of card. The image doesn’t need to be arranged orderly; the point is to see where any particular combination of images stands out. You may well find that one image next to a picture of something completely different suddenly inspires that spark of inspiration, and, presto, a creative idea is born.
New start collating that creative freedom into something more structured. With your empty room firmly fixed in your mind, try painting it in fanciful and imaginary colors with imaginary treatments for the walls. Play around with different floor ideas. It would be best to keep relating to your mood board for inspiration.
Well, at least go window shopping. Narrow down your choices to specific products. Starts collating visual presentations with samples and photographs of specific items. Keep your search board - you do not have to be overly practical while you have your creative hat on, so don’t drop that sofa just because of its king’s ransom-sized price tag. Stay as loyal as you can to the creative idea at this stage. The budget will have its sway later, but not just yet.
Write a list of what needs to be done. Start with the big stuff like building work or major interior carpentry, then make headings to include all the other bits and pieces - plumbing, electrics, flooring, decorating, soft furnishings, upholstery, and the fabulous “FFF” (Furniture, fittings, and furnishing). Though it may not sound enthralling, there is a lot of pleasure in getting this list right. Try to keep the proposed scheme at the front of your mind as you start imagining the new elements in your blank canvas room arriving one by one. As you do, check everything is in the right place: if you want to put the television in that corner, is there an aerial point and a wall socket nearby? If you put the sofa under that window, will it block the view or, more positively, hide that radiator?
As your choices become more finely honed, start working up the level of detail in your design scheme. Your interior design presentation should now have a sample or picture of everything you plan to do. For every product you have chosen for your room, your presentation should include as much detail as possible. So, where does your list says to paint the ceiling? List the paint and put in the supplier's details; where it says to lay the carpet, give all the necessary reference numbers to ensure the carpet arrives.
Now tot up your budget - yes, the scary bit. You’ve been so concerned with your design presentation that should you suddenly decide you cannot afford it all at once, then at least you have a fixed design goal to aim for as you implement the elements piecemeal. Your considered presentation will also help keep your confidence levels up as you go through transforming your room. One of the worst things you could ever do is run out of steam halfway through and suddenly decide that all the elements are there to work in combination as a team. Singly and out of context, they may seem incoherent, but when balanced by all the ingredients in your presentation, they will be just what the room needs. And, even when the budget manages to break its boundaries, try to keep the ideas contained within your design presentation sacrosanct. So, if the original sofa with its luxurious fabric is way too expensive, perhaps a plainer, cheaper sofa with a few big cushions in the same fabric could achieve the same effect? That wallpaper you have chosen may cost the earth, but have you thought about rolling up your sleeves and making something similar yourself with a stencil? I can honestly say that creativity can get you out of some seemingly impossible budgeting tight spots - as long as you have a detailed design presentation to work from, you will be fine.
Practical Design
